GPS/GNSS Corner: Understanding the New L5 Signal
By Sarah Martinez, PLS · April 19, 2026
With the latest GPS Block III satellites now broadcasting the L5 civil signal, surveyors have access to a third frequency that can significantly improve positioning accuracy and reliability.
## What is L5?
L5 is a civilian-use signal broadcast at 1176.45 MHz. Unlike L1 and L2, L5 was specifically designed for safety-of-life applications and features:
- Higher power (stronger signal in challenging environments)
- Wider bandwidth (better multipath rejection)
- Advanced signal structure (faster acquisition)
## Benefits for Land Surveyors
### Improved Accuracy Under Canopy
Triple-frequency processing allows better ionospheric modeling, which is especially beneficial in the East Bay hills where tree canopy can degrade L1/L2 solutions.
### Faster RTK Initialization
With three frequencies available, RTK initialization times can drop from 30-60 seconds to under 10 seconds in good conditions.
### Better Urban Performance
The higher power L5 signal penetrates urban environments better, making downtown Oakland and San Francisco surveys more reliable.
## Equipment Requirements
To take advantage of L5, you need a triple-frequency receiver. Most major manufacturers (Trimble, Leica, Topcon) have offered L5-capable receivers since 2022. Check your firmware version — a recent update may be required.
## Current Constellation Status
As of January 2026, 18 of 31 GPS satellites are broadcasting L5. Full operational capability is expected by 2028.
